Miami New Times staff writer Gus Garcia-Roberts has been named a finalist in the Investigative Reporters & Editors contest for 2012. His series on Florida’s $150 million McKay scholarship program, which hands out money with virtually no supervision, was cited by judges in the small newspaper/online category.
The winner in the category was the Sarasota Herald Tribune, which published an oft-cited survey for Florida’s dirtiest cops. Congratulations to Matt (and his dad, Steve, a former Miami Herald editor who was cited in the medium multiplatform category.)
Garcia-Roberts is the senior writer at Miami New Times, a Village Voice Media newspaper. He was previously a staff writer at the Cleveland Scene, and was a fellow at Medill’s Academy for Alternative Journalism.
