Despite the fact that there’s no doubt Máximo Caminero walked into Pérez Art Museum Miami and smashed a vase by artist Ai Weiwei (it’s on video, after all), Caminero has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Caminero, an artist who claimed he smashed the vase in part to protest a perceived lack of support of local artists, faces a charge of criminal mischief over $1,000, a felony. He has apologized for the smashing.

His attorneys, however, today entered a not-guilty plea in writing and hope to take the charges to trial. It’s obviously more of a legal maneuver than a denial that, you know, Caminero didn’t actually smash the vase.
