If you like your movies with stunted dialogue, big hair, plenty of fight scenes, and a Florida setting, we have good news for you. Austin, Texas-based film distribution company Drafthouse Films has acquired the rights to Miami Connection, a so-bad-it’s-good movie first released in 1987.
Directed by “black belt philosopher/author/inspirational speaker” Grandmaster Y.K. Kim, the movie looks worthy of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Drafthouse’s own press release describes it as “the story of fearless synth rock band Dragon Sound as they embark on a roundhouse wreck-wave of crime-crushing justice in the streets of Orlando.” Viewers can also expect “a relentless fury of ninjas, rock ‘n’ roll, lawless bikers, and brutal knife fights,” it continues.
We’re not sure what the “Miami connection” is, exactly; the film appears to take place entirely in Orlando (including at, um, “Central Florida’s hottest nightclub”). But even if Kim just threw the word “Miami” into the title because Orlando doesn’t exactly have that sexy, South Florida ring to it, we’re excited to see this gem on the big screen. How can you resist the “new dimension in rock ‘n’ roll” that is Dragon Sound?

Miami Connection will re-premiere at the New York Asian Film Festival on Saturday, July 7, and will then return to theaters in the fourth quarter of 2012.
