Anailin de la Rua de la Torre and Javier Nuñez Florian, the actors who disappeared at the Miami airport during a layover between their home in Cuba and New York City’s Tribeca Film Festival, appeared on Spanish-language station America TeVe last weekend.
The pair said they are safe and healthy, and confirmed that they would be seeking political asylum in the U.S.
The actors, who are also a couple, are living with de la Rua de la Torre’s relatives in Miami for the time being, Reuters reports.
“It’s hard to leave your family and friends behind,” de la Rua told Reuters. “But at the same time you do it so you can help them. There’s no future in Cuba.”

The couple’s TV resurfacing happened a day after Una Noche, the film in which they starred that screened at Tribeca, won several awards at the festival, including a best-actor award split between Nunez and his costar, Dariel Arrechada, who attended the New York screening as planned and says he intends to return to Cuba.
