See Will Dexter Swap Sex for Serial Killing?

First they came for CSI: Miami, and we said nothing. (Well, actually, we kind of celebrated a little.)

But then they came for Dexter, and there was no one left to speak for him… because he had already killed everyone, bagged them up, and thrown them into the Gulf Stream.

Sara Colleton, executive producer of the Showtime drama, confirmed to TV Guide yesterday that yes, the end is near for the Miami serial killer with a heart (if you can call it that) of gold. Though the show has been renewed through the next two seasons, those two seasons will be its last.

As Colleton told TV Guide in a super-spoilery Q&A:

This was definite. We wanted to end it this year, but the network convinced us that it would be best to do it in two years. In some ways, this is a two-season series-ender. We have worked that out and know where it’s going to end. Next year will definitely be the last year of Dexter. Absolutely.

Dexter‘s had its ups and downs, from the Ice Truck Killer (up) to the Jimmy Smits season (major downer). But after last season’s gross-out sibling love scenes and a major cliffhanger that introduced Dexter’s sister Deb to her brother’s “dark passenger,” it’s hard to imagine the series continuing much farther.

Because Colleton and her team had planned to wrap up the story arc in seven seasons, we’ll approach the end with caution. Here’s hoping for a little less incest, and a little more ritual sacrifice of violent criminals.
