Finding Significance in Small Stuff With Kelly Lee Owens

It’s just past sunset in Kelly Lee Owens’ London apartment, and she’s palming a crystal while examining a pair of pigeons in the twilight when she’s asked about “Bird,” a kalimba-infused track from her eponymous 2017 album. To Owens, it’s a coincidence that gives meaning to an otherwise mundane moment.

French Electronic Dance Act Vitalic Paints With Obscure Strokes

Pascal Arbez-Nicolas is the legendary French electronic dance music artist known as Vitalic, but he doesn’t consider himself a producer. He’s more of a songwriter who tells stories using the sound palette of techno house, he says, filtering his personal life through four-to-the-floor bangers with big kick drums and blasts of synthesizer.

Nine Artists to Watch at Calle Ocho 2018

Across Latin America, the unceasing horns and drums and vivid colors of carnival herald the arrival of spring. Traditionally, it’s a Dionysian celebration that worships our mortal forms and vices as we prepare for the Christian season of Lent, which acknowledges the beauty in our impermanence. In Defense of Jason Mraz

On the surface, Jason Mraz appears to be as pleasant as his music. But if actions speak louder than words, he might be even nicer than he sounds. How nice, you ask? As nice as a dainty, delicate kiss on the cheek from a 90-year-old grandmother who has just slipped…

The Crumbs: 25 Years of Holding That $hit Right

In 1995, Todd Congelliere’s Recess Records, then based in Torrance, California, released a quirky seven-inch platter by Miami punk rockers the Crumbs, called I Fell in Love With an Alien Girl and I Think I’m Goin’ to Mars With Her. It was the first recording of many by a band many now celebrating its 25th year. Fine wines age well. Who knew an ice-cold Schlitz would do too?
