Every summer since 1988, the state of Florida has opened many of its lakes, rivers and swamps to a limited-time public alligator hunt. This year’s hunt began August 15 and continues through September 12.
Also, since it is the start of football season and all, and because I’m an FSU grad and am therefore obligated to begin spitting venom at University of Florida and anything orange, blue, or gator, I thought it would be fun to share a recipe for Crocked Gator from fl-seafood.com.
Some of you may recall Florida gator tail picadillo was served at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival this past February, but to say it was reminiscent of spicy dishwater would be a compliment. (Judging by the onsite trash can filled with barely touched sample cups of the stuff, many tent visitors agreed.) So let’s give this easy Crocked Gator recipe a go instead, shall we?

10-14 alligator ribs
6 ounces barbecue sauce
1 Tbs salt
1 Tbs pepper
1 Tbs garlic powder
Directions: Season ribs with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, then place ribs in crock pot. Pour barbecue sauce over everything. Cover and cook until tender.
