Fall is upon us, which means the masses are officially going apeshit over all things pumpkin. And number one on most people’s list is Starbucks’ universally adored Pumpkin Spice Latte.
We admit, it’s damn delicious. But at $5 or $6 a pop, drinking it daily will break the bank. And you need to save your pennies for Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa shopping.
So, here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own pumpkin spice coffee concoction at home for a whole lot cheaper and and even a lot healthier too.

Step 1: Ingredients.
You’ll need:
- 6 oz. or so hot coffee of choice
- 2 tbsp pumpkin purée
- 2 tbsp (or likely more — to taste) brown sugar or sugar substitute of choice
- 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
- 3/4 cup milk (we used almond, but any milk will do)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract

Step 2: Heat a saucepan over medium heat and whisk together everything but the coffee. Heat for a couple minutes until steamy. Whisk until frothy.
Step 3: Pour over your coffee. Use a big cup, ’cause this produces a hefty drink. Stir and taste. Add more sugar if you’re into it. Starbucks uses about a gallon, so you might be used to it being supersweet and need to up the ante.
Step 4: Top with whipped cream and a smidgen of pumpkin pie spice. Voilá! You’ve got yourself one hell of a breakfast bevvie. Really, it takes only about five minutes longer than waiting at Starbucks — and at least you can spell your own name, y’know, if you’re really into the Sharpie-scribbed-moniker deal.
