Happy National Rum Day!

Sure, it’s another made up holiday, but when there are cheap rum drinks involved do you really care?

If you want to get technical, since sugar cane is a major Florida crop…and since rum is distilled from sugar and/or molasses, you could say that rum should be the “official spirit of Florida”.

So there. We’ve justified, yet again, a reason to go and celebrate. Here’s the scoop on the holiday happenings:

What’s better than enjoying a rum cocktail at Broken Shaker while sitting on a beach chair after a long, grueling work week? The fact that you can enjoy said rum drink, made with Atlantico rum that’s hand crafted in the Dominican Republic, for only five bucks during the Shaker’s special National Rum Day happy hour from 6 – 8 p.m. today, August 16. Enjoy a Bodega Special, or make it at home with this recipe:

The Bodega Special

2 oz Atlantico Rum private cask

1 1/2 oz mamey juice

Related

1/4 oz all spice dram

3/4 oz lemon juice

1/2 oz simple syrup

Dash angostura

Related

Garnish: mint and mamey

Combine ingredients except garnish in shaker, strain into highball glass with ice.

To celebrate National Rum Day, Brother Jimmy’s BBQ has teamed up with Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum to host a “Root Beer Float Social” today from 4 to 6 p.m. Jerry Floats will be served from the official Sailor Jerry Ice Cream Cart on the terrace for only $6. What’s a Jerry Float, you ask? Just your basic awesome root beer float….made awesomer with rum!!! Here’s the recipe if you want to make it at home (and you do…you really want to make and drink these as often as you can):

Radio Bar is heating up National Rum Day with a spicy cocktail that can best be described as “so cool it’s hot”. The capsaicin mango is made with Atlantico Reserva rum, fresh mango, chili syrup, and lime juice. It’s kind of a nod to the mangos on a stick that get doused with hot sauce and eaten on a hot summer day…but in a glass (and with rum). $12 gets you this hot and refreshing libation.
