When is a cocktail not a cocktail? When it’s an ale based on a classic cocktail. Or, to be more precise, a collection of ales produced by two of the United States’ most unique craft brewers in a special bi-coastal collaboration.
The ales in question are the Gentlemen’s Club Old-Fashioned Style ales, a joint project of Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing and Widmer Brothers Brewing from Portland. Tonight, July 15, from 9 to 11 p.m., The Local Craft Food & Drink in Coral Gables will host the only Miami launch of these special brews.
The three beers are all based on the notes and flavors of the classic Old Fashioned cocktail recipe and call to mind the gentlemen’s clubs where the drink was served a century ago.
The beers are brewed with ingredients taken from the home states of both breweries and feature Florida oranges and Portland cherries and hand-selected specialty malts designed to bring out the flavors and notes found in the classic cocktail.

The ales are then finished in different woods to create three distinct flavor profiles. Bourbon barrels were used to create the Bourbon Barrel-Aged Gentlemen’s Club (10.5% ABV); rye whiskey barrels were used for the Rye Whiskey Barrel-Aged Gentlemen’s Club (10.5% ABV); finally new oak spirals were used for the New Oak-Aged Gentlemen’s Club (9.5% ABV).
The three ales will be available at $10 each, or in flights for $12.
