Elvis died on August 16. And hey, it is Madonna’s birthday too.
Even more importantly, Miami’s own Stephanie “Baby Cobra” Torres came bouncing into the world on the same date. And without her, we’d be missing a lot of great Poplife events, like Thursday Degeneration and all manner of post-punk, nu-wave, horrorcore vibes.
Because she has wonderful taste and access to Grand Central‘s The Garret, she’s inviting all of the 305’s party people to her old-school grindhouse birthday celebration, complete with jello shots, musical chairs, prizes, costumes, and dirty rock ‘n’ roll.

As soon as you walk in the door, the party’s gonna be on. Either pay a $5 cover or take a free jello shot to enter.
“What are you going to do?” Torres jokes. For us, it’s obvious. Party guests can also enjoy complimentary Stolen Rum drinks until midnight.
Everyone is encouraged to come dressed in theme.
“We want people to dress like they’re in their favorite horror movie,” she says. “If you’re an extra in a movie, how would you dress? Or any favorite characters. Take your cues from 1970s movies, Robert Rodriguez, Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, or even Quentin Tarantino.”
Then snap a pic to commemorate your look in a special photo booth, equipped with prop guns, gas masks, and chain saws. There may also be an actual Thunderdome-style battle cage, so get ready to pretend to fight to the death. But just make sure you save the real rumble for the musical chairs competition, hosted by Dirty Machete Sanchez. Stay in the game and get free drinks.
“Anytime that you’re able to walk into a chair once the music stops, you take a shot,” Torres says. “So you’re drunk by the end.”
The winner gets a pair of Guided by Voices tickets, though. So try to keep your wits about you.
Throughout the night, enjoy silent screenings of horrorgore cinema classics and shake ass to the rockin’ sounds of DJs Mikey R, Peligro, and Mix Piggy.
“It’s basically for anyone who likes to have fun and dress up and dance to dirty rock ‘n’ roll,” she says. “And if you don’t like to have fun, we’ll come and teach you.”
