Better Than: Electro-rap posers like Kesha.
Here I thought LMFAO was the worst thing to happen to hipster-hop, but then came Feminem songstress Kesha. Coing to the industry’s attention when she sang on Miami hip-hop artist Flo Rida’s hit single “Right Round,” she seemed rather harmless then. But then came that insufferable song “TiK ToK,” which rips Uffie’s style completely and takes the party-rap genre to new lows.
Then there is Kid Sister. Somebody who seems she should have made it big long time ago. But instead of pairing up with sure-fire hitmakers, she depends on underground producers and DJs who are more comfortable making house music than pop hits. Flosstradamus, A-Trak, XXXchange, Rusko and Sinden have all helped her become queen of the dance scene. Can they make her a household name? Probably not, but who cares. This is what separates her from the LMFAOs and Keshas of the world.

Kid Sister reemerged in Miami Friday night at Klutch, located in the former
Prive space, barely a month after she performed at the Delano during
Art Basel. If you witnessed her earlier performance, it was pretty much
a carbon copy down to the wardrobe. Still, her material off her debut
album Ultraviolet sounds fresh as ever.
Starting out with her current single “Right Hand Hi,” Kid Sister didn’t
let the fact that the venue wasn’t as packed as it could have been —
which is not her fault, all of South Beach was barren thanks to the
post New Year’s hangover. The track is good but doesn’t necessarily
have the strong hooks featured in previous singles like “Pro Nails” or
“Control,” both performed live as well. Other tracks like “54321,”
“Get Fresh,” “Switchboard,” “Let Me Bang,” and her Jungle Brothers
cover of “I’ll House You” all show why dance music fans have a special
place in their heart for her.
Critic’s Notebook
Personal Bias: I’ve followed Kid Sister basically through out her entire career.
Random Detail: I didn’t spend much time at the venue when it was Prive, so I’m still on the fence whether I like Klutch.
By The Way: If you missed Kid Sister this time around, I
wouldn’t be surprised if she’s back in town during Winter Music
Conference or even on the Ultra lineup itself.
