For eons, humanity has celebrated the autumnal equinox. Back in the day, summer ended and the pagans immediately noticed that the dirt was dying, crops were rotting, and only the grave lay ahead. So they said “Fuck it!” and threw an apocalypse party.
There was binge drinking, rampant overeating, incoherent chanting, indiscriminate sex, and human sacrifice. (Or maybe we’re flashing back to frosh week?) To be brief, it was an awesome time.
But in the 21st century, we’re a few degrees more civilized, so we’ve left behind the public humping and ritualistic murder. Hence, tomorrow’s Death to the Sun festival at Bar.
If you missed last year’s inaugural edition of this “farewell to summer celebration,” here’s some history: Started by a guy named Ricardo Guerrero (Animals of the Arctic, This Heart Electric, and hahahelp!), the whole thing is a casually chaotic bacchanal that’s basically focused on noise, booze, and barbecue.

“I just really wanted to do a summer festival type of thing, like all the big ones that happen in faraway places, with $300 price tags,” Guerrero explains. “I wanted it to be a ridiculous amount of bands and for it to start in the daytime. But I also wanted it to be free, and mostly local bands. Like a big party with friends!”
The 2009 party starred 18 live bands, five DJs, several merch booths, circus freaks, and a voodoo witch doctor. It packed American Legion to capacity, even spilling over into the backyard and parking lot. No surprise, really, considering a pre-fame Surfer Blood made the scene, alongside a dozen and a half other bands.
Tomorrow, Death to the Sun 2010 will invade Bar with 14 returning alumnus on the roster — including big Crossfade faves Ice Cream, not to mention Little Beard, Teepee, BFGF, and Dino Felipe. Expect notable newbies like the President, Slashpine, and Viking Funeral, too.
“The genre and style of the music varies,” says Guerrero. “But there’s an underlying aesthetic that ties them loosely together. It’s rough-edged, raw, energetic, unpolished.”
