Crossfade is extremely sad to report that Sonic Youth founders and indie rock’s always-cool Mom and Dad, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, have announced a separation after 27 years of marriage.
The obvious question in the wake of Kim and Thurston’s shocking split … Will Sonic Youth survive? Or is this the end of the seemingly immortal, 30-year-old post-punk band?
The couple issued a joint statement via Matador Records that also addresses Sonic Youth’s upcoming South American tour dates and the future of their legendary band.
From Matador:

Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment.
Crossfade is on the edge of our wheeled computer chair, in part for more details on what went wrong. But really, we just can’t imagine a world without Sonic Youth.
