Earlier this year, the American Civil Liberties Union took up the cause of the released sex offenders living under the Julia Tuttle Causeway, but today the group’s lawsuit against the county was dismissed.
The ACLU argued that the county’s ordinance that bars sex offenders from living within 2,500 feet of schools or parks was superseded by the state’s less strict barrier of 1,000 feet. Because there is very little housing in Miami-Dade that isn’t more than 2,500 feet from a park or school, many sex offenders find themselves living under the bridge.
But the suit was dismissed, and under the bridge they’ll remain. For now anyway.
