To Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, Florida’s serious unemployment level is apparently a laughing matter. While talking to potential voters during a stop in Tampa today, Romney was listening to Floridians discuss the trouble of finding work. With a laugh, Romney said he too was unemployed. Romney’s net worth is believed to be over $200 million.
Mitt Romney sat at the head of the table at a coffee shop here on Thursday, listening to a group of unemployed Floridians explain the challenges of looking for work. When they finished, he weighed in with a predicament of his own.
“I should tell my story,” Mr. Romney said. “I’m also unemployed.”
He chuckled. The eight people gathered around him, who had just finished talking about strategies of finding employment in a slow-to-recover economy, joined him in laughter.
Romney made his millions by co-founding Bain Capitol. The company bought into well-known but troubled companies and specialized in turning them around. Though, those turn-arounds often involved mass layoffs. Romney and his wife now have a reported net worth of as much as $250 million. That’s about in the same neighborhood as Florida Governor Rick Scott, who listed his net worth as $219 million.
