Eighteen-year-old Jay Stubbs is behind bars and facing charges that he fatally shot his 16-year-old girlfriend, Tracy Gabriel, in the face. Police booked Stubbs just a little more than 24 hours after the early Tuesday-morning murder.

Gabriel was reportedly at a friend’s apartment at 1525 NW First Place when Stubbs arrived shortly after midnight Tuesday morning. The two got into an argument, which escalated into a physical confrontation.

Police believe Stubbs began beating Gabriel and then shot her in the face as she was trying to defend herself.

“It was a senseless argument between a young couple that escalated, and ultimately she was slain,” Det. Kevin Ruggiero told NBCMiami.
