The first high-profile arrest of Miami Beach police’s pumped-up presence heading into Memorial Day weekend or just a coincidence?

New Yorks Knicks player J.R. Smith was arrested on South Beach on a warrant for not having a valid driver’s license last night around 9.

The details of why he was pulled over in the first place aren’t yet known. NBC Miami reports that Smith was pulled over at about 8:30 p.m. on Washington Avenue for the unspecified traffic violation. According to his Twitter account, it seems he was staying at the Fontainebleau Resort.

A search revealed that Smith had a bench warrant out for his arrest for not having a valid driver’s license. Police booked him in to Miami-Dade County jail shortly before midnight. He bonded out early this morning.

Smith, who was acquired by the Knicks in February, has a history of traffic problems. In 2007, Smith was involved in an accident that killed one of his passengers. He plead guilty to reckless driving and spent 24 days in jail. Smith had also been in a minor accident while driving with Carmelo Anthony earlier that year, and his driving record has a history of speeding tickets and suspensions.
