The shortlist for HUD secretary keeps getting longer. Mayor Manny Diaz is still on this list, released to the AP from ominous sources inside the party and transition team:
Miami Mayor Manny DiazRep. James Clyburn, D-S.C.Renee Glover, head of Atlanta’s housing authorityNicolas Retsinas, director of Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing StudiesShaun Donovan, commissioner of New York City’s housing departmentAdolfo Carrion Jr., Bronx borough president
What’s interesting about the list is that it’s evenly divided between Hispanics, African-Americans, and whites. Clyburn, as majority whip, is the third-most powerful representative on the Hill. Obama has already taken Hillary Clinton and Rahm Emanuel out of Congress. Is he looking to snag all the power players who aren’t nailed down? Not sure if there’s any significance to order here, but Manny is at the top of the un-alphabetized list. Glover has won many accolades for turning around Atlanta’s housing situation, but some have criticized her for encouraging gentrification and favoring economic development over services for the poor. (Then again: Manny? Gentrification? Naaaah?!!!)
