In a lot of ways Randy Shannon was a dream coach for the Miami Hurricanes: a native of the city, a graduate of the program, a great recruiter, and a dedicated leader who kept his players on the right track off the field. At the end of the day the thing that matters most is wins (as Jay-Z says, moral victories are for minor league coaches). Shannon didn’t deliver. After four years he’s been let go.

Here’s the release from the official Hurricanes athletics site:

University of Miami Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt announced the dismissal of Randy Shannon Saturday evening.

“We have made a decision to seek new leadership for our football program,” said Hocutt. “Our expectations are to compete for championships and return to the top of the college football world. We will immediately begin a national search.”

The news comes after Miami’s 23-20 overtime loss to the University of South Florida. The ‘Canes were 28-22 overall under Shannon, and had never even made it to the ACC championship. No news on whether Shannon will be allowed to coach the ‘Canes in their bowl game. We’ll have more on the story later.
