“The bus smells like the bologna sandwiches at DCJ,” a friend recently quipped. He was sitting next to a woman who kept shouting about Jesus on a seemingly never-ending bus ride to South Beach. “This is wacky, bro.”
Indeed it is. But it’s that very stench of stale deli meat and those lovable schizophrenic crack addicts that make Miami-Dade County Transit one of the best. In fact, it’s the eighth best in the whole country, at least according to a new survey by Walk Score that ranked Miami among the top 25 best cities for public transportation, and the Big Mango as the lone southern city in the top 10.

“To compute our rankings, we calculated the Transit Score of over 1 million locations in the largest 25 cities that provide open public transit data,” Walk Score explains on its website.
“Transit Score measures how well a location is served by public transit by assigning a ‘usefulness’ value to nearby transit routes based on frequency, route type, and distance to the nearest stop on the route.”
With over 90 Metrobus routes, a 22-mile Metrorail system that’ll take you from Hialeah to Kendall, and a Metromover that zips your around Downtown, you’d think it’d take less than an hour-and-a-half to get from Coconut Grove to Miami Beach. Keep dreaming.
