There are certain things politicians just don’t say in South Florida. Somewhere between praising Fidel Castro and insulting our Key lime pie sits suggesting that we set up oil rigs in the middle of the Everglades. During her trip in Florida this weekend, Michele Bachmann said she was open to the idea of doing just that.

“The United States needs to be less dependent on foreign sources of energy and more dependent upon American resourcefulness,” Bachmann said at a Sarasota campaign event. “Whether that is in the Everglades, or whether that is in the eastern Gulf region, or whether that’s in North Dakota, we need to go where the energy is.”

“Of course it needs to be done responsibly. If we can’t responsibly access energy in the Everglades then we shouldn’t do it.”

Bachmann is also in favor of doing away with the Environmental Protection Agency.

$30,000

Yeah, Michele, that’s the best way to win over Floridians. Just a little over a year after the Gulf oil disaster, come down here and suggest that you’re open to the idea of drilling for oil in a national park that’s a critical source of our drinking water.
