An off-duty New York City police officer was shot on South Beach outside a ritzy beach resort early this morning, police say. Miami Beach detectives have shut down Collins Avenue between 12th and 13th Streets today while they search for whomever shot the off-duty vacationing cop outside the luxury 1233 Lofts hotel.
The wounded officer’s name and condition haven’t been released yet, according to various news reports.
The NYC detective got into an “altercation” outside the luxury lofts early this morning, CBS4 reports. Guests across the street tell the Herald they heard “multiple gunshots” outside 1233 Lofts, which rents apartments for up to $600 a night.
The victim is currently undergoing surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Gridlock has enveloped much of the east side of South Beach today, meanwhile, as police have closed off Collins Avenue outside the hotel. Collins, Washington and Ocean were all virtual parking lots for most of Saturday as weekenders dealt with the investigation.
The crime continues a bad run of high-profile violence in SoBe this summer, from a police-shooting riddled Memorial Day Weekend to a pair of ATV cops fired after seriously injuring beach-goers while joyriding three weeks ago.
We’ll update when we learn more about the shooting or the officer who was shot.
