A male student at Redland Middle School was airlifted to a hospital today after being shot around 2:30 this afternoon on school grounds by another student. According to Local 10, the boy was a sixth grader and was grazed in the leg by the bullet.
Authorities have found the gun and are currently questioning the student who brought it to school in a backpack. However, it’s not clear that the shooting was intentional. NBC 6 adds that authorities believe that the gun may have gone off accidentally. Though, earlier reports suggested that a bullet exploded after a student threw it on the ground.
The school was placed on a “Code Red” lockdown after the shooting, but students have now been allowed to leave.
The victim is now in stable condition at Miami Children’s Hospital.
