In a feature last month, New Times explored skater culture in Miami, a city that’s never quite warmed to thrashers even though its warm environs and concrete jungles could easily make the Magic City a skateboard mecca. Last night brought another tragic blow to the scene when a 14-year-old riding a board on NW 57th Avenue was pinned between two cars and killed on the spot.
Update: The skateboarder was Sebastian Tellez, says Det. William Moreno, a spokesman for the City of Miami PD. He lived near SW 3rd St. and 44th Ave.
Police still aren’t identifying the 14-year-old as detectives work to notify all his family members, says Napier Velasquez, a spokesman for the City of Miami police.
Just after 6 p.m. last night, the teen was skating south down Red Road when the victim tried to cross at the intersection with NW 7th Street, just south of the Dolphin Expressway.

A Toyota Rav4 headed westbound on NW 7th slammed into the teen, swerved, and rammed into a Dodge Caravan waiting in the intersection to make a left turn.
The teen died while pinned between the cars.
We’ll update the post when the police release more info about the teen. No arrests have been made in connection with the crash.
