At 3:30 this morning a Miami-Dade police shot and killed a 32-year-old woman after she started firing at officers, and shot one in the abdomen. Police responded to the scene after the woman was reported to have been making threats to herself and others. Update: The woman has been identified as Catawaba Howard.
The incident occurred at a house near the intersection of NW 109th Street and 10th Avenue in northwest Miami-Dade.
As police tried to approach the house the woman came out of the house and began firing her handgun at officer from the doorway. One officer was hit in the abdomen and taken to a hospital in Pembroke Pines. He’s recovering stable condition and was wearing a protective vest at the time.
Police returned fire and shot and killed the woman.

According to WSVN, the woman’s mother says that she had been discharged from the Air Force and was licensed to have the gun. The mother also said the woman was troubled and wanted to end her life.
Update: Several reports have identified the woman as Catawaba Howard. She was an 8-year veteran of the Air Force and Army Reserves, who had recently left the service. A Facebook page apparently belonging to Howard lists her last place of employment as the Miami-Dade School Board.
