We may have made mention before, but in case you haven’t heard, just like papa, Locos Por Juana’ s got a brand new bag. It’s an EP called Evolucion, and that’s not just a clever name. Living up to the EP’s title, and to the lyrics on the title track, this six-song set features some bold new moves for the guys as they experiment with new sounds and rhythms. Still, the disc never loses the essence of what’s made them long-time local favorites — a strong foundation fused of cumbia, champeta, and roots reggae.
Tracks like “Plata o Plomo,” “Afro Sound,” and “La Chismosa” display a band more mature, developed, and sure-footed than ever. And if you’ve caught them live recently, you know for a fact they’re firing on all cylinders onstage.
Head to Transit Lounge tomorrow night, Saturday, May 22, to check them out at one of Miami’s finest boozing establishments, and you might just get treated to some of that new material. Cover is free, as always, and LPJ turn that place out every single time they play the downtown locale, packing the already oft-bustling barroom and patio to overflowing.
Locos Por Juana. 11 p.m. Saturday, May 22. Transit Lounge, 729 SW 1st Ave., Miami. Admission is free; age 21 and up. 305-377-4628; transitlounge.us
