Born Matthew Paul Miller, the musician made it all the harder for us to say his name when he started using the Askenazi version of it. This former Phish-head and current vegan knows a thing or two about touring and performing. He’s been packing joints (not those kinda joints) since his first album Shake Off the Dust… Arise came out in 2004.
His popularity exists not only because of the gimmick of a Hassidic Jew singing rasta music, but also because Matisyahu is a talented and prolific artist. He’s no musical fundamentalist, seeking out interesting collabs with Muslim beatboxer Kenny Muhammad, Akon, and others.
