Come February, Sundance is making its way from the snow-capped mountains of Utah to the sunny shores of Miami.
On February 15, the creative institute — along with the Miami Filmmakers Collective and the Knight Foundation — is hosting New Frontier Flash Lab, a forum dedicated to schooling attendees on the ins and outs of art, technology and next-gen storytelling.

“The panelists include some of the pioneers of innovative story forms advanced over the last five years including interactive documentary, transmedia storytelling, data visualization storytelling, crowdsourced storytelling, immersive or mixed reality storytelling, interactive installation and apps, transmedia activism, and more,” says Kamal Sinclair, the Senior Manager of Sundance Institute’s New Frontier Story Lab.

Participating panelists include Scott Snibbe of Bjork’s Biophila and Philip Glass’ Rework, Jonathan Harris of Cowbird and We Feel Fine, Jigar Mehta of 18 Days in Egypt and Susan Bonds, CEO of 42 Entertainment . Of course, all local artists, filmmakers and interested parties are invited to join.
“Participants will be able to discuss the success factors and lessons learned from their experiments, and discuss the possibilities for story over the next five years,” Sinclair adds.
In addition to the public portion, the lab includes an invite-only series of intensive sessions where local artists will explore some of the topics in deeper depth.
While the Sundance Institute is most famous for its annual star-studded film festival, they do lots of other good stuff, like offer artistic development programs for directors, screenwriters, producers, film composers, playwrights and theater artists. We’re pretty lucky to get some of that storytelling magic in MIA.
