Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s….
Well, it’s a plane. But it’s also a work of art.
That’s the idea behind “Plane Text,” an art project headed to Miami Beach during Art Basel this year, in which the planes that usually fly banners promoting cheap drinks for girls at clubs will instead carry messages from a selection of artists.

According to GalleristNY, three airplanes will fly banners displaying short text messages from a variety of artists curated by Adam Shopkorn, a professional curator and cultural ambassador for Morgans Hotel Group. Morgans, which operates the Delano, Mondrian, and Shore Club hotels in South Beach, is organizing the project.
Artists contributing to the project include several whose works are included in the Rubell Family Collection, including Gary Simmons, Richard Prince, Hank Willis Thomas, and John Baldessari,. Lawrence Weiner, whose work has appeared at the NADA Art Fair; and Jack Piersen, whose work “Paradise Lights” lit up the walls at the Museum of Contemporary Art in 2002, will also provide messages, among others.
The project will run from December 5-9, starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 1 p.m. each day.
